Maintenance by the book: sensible or too limited?

Your BMW or MINI is a technical masterpiece, designed with precision and built for performance. But what about maintenance? Is it really enough to simply service it “according to factory specifications”? Or are you perhaps missing opportunities to really protect your engine, automatic transmission or brakes?

At BimmerStore we are often asked:

“Should I stick strictly to the factory intervals, or is more frequent maintenance better?”

In this article we give you clear and honest advice about what is smart, what is marketing, and when more maintenance really adds value.

What is meant by 'factory specifications'?

The service schedules of BMW and MINI are based on standardized operating conditions:

  • Annual mileage of ±15,000 km
  • Steady driving (little city driving, few traffic jams)
  • Not tuned or driven sportily

But do you really drive like that?

Probably not.

And that is exactly where the shoe pinches:

Many drivers use their car more heavily than the standard profile on which the manufacturer bases its schedule.

Examples of critical points: where the factory is too optimistic

1. Transmission oil – “lifetime” does not exist

ZF and Getrag themselves recommend replacement between 60,000 and 100,000 km.

BMW says: "never".

We say: believe the manufacturer of the transmission, not of the car.

2. Engine oil – intervals of 25,000 km are too long

With hard use, tuning or a lot of city traffic we recommend every 10,000 to 15,000 km.

We see chain wear or increased sludge formation more often with long intervals.

3. Coolant and brake fluid – often forgotten

BMW keeps putting off coolant replacement.

We recommend every 4 years for that, and brake fluid at least every 2 years.

4. Spark plugs and air filters – tuning demands more

Tuning? Then you also need to replace your spark plugs and air filters sooner.

We match this to your car's engine setup.

So why does the manufacturer prescribe these intervals?

Simple:

👉 Cost control during warranty

👉 Marketing – low maintenance costs look attractive

👉 Lease strategy – many cars go back into circulation after 3 years

Not to keep your car healthy for 250,000 km.

Why do we choose ‘tailored maintenance’ at BimmerStore?

Because your use may not be standard. You drive:

✅ More sportily

✅ More short trips

✅ Tuned

✅ At high speeds

✅ With a caravan or trailer

Then your car needs more than the absolute minimum.

That is why at every service we look at:

  • What is the usage profile?
  • What is the technical risk?
  • Which upgrades (tuning, other software)?

That way you get transparent advice:

No unnecessary costs, but preventive maintenance where it counts.

Our philosophy: transparency and durability over slogans

At BimmerStore we do not believe in “blindly replacing everything sooner”.

But we do believe in:

  • ✔ Technical substantiation
  • ✔ Maintenance matched to use
  • ✔ Making customers aware of what is really needed
  • ✔ Prevention over overhaul

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Conclusion: maintenance according to use, not just by the book

At BimmerStore we maintain BMWs and MINIs not according to slogans, but according to technical logic.

That way you get the most out of your car, without surprises.
